Being Natural In The Military

Joining the military in 2011 was one of the craziest, yet greatest, things I’ve done thus far. As you can imagine there are a lot of rules and regulations, as with any organization. But one regulation in particular just drives me up a wall!

Hair standards!

Now I completely understand these standards are in place to keep a certain appearance while in uniform, but it is very hard to manipulate my natural hair to stay tucked inside of this box “they” created.

If I wear a bun, my bun can not be bigger than 2″.

Trust me, they pull out rulers and check, lol!

This makes it hard to get braids as a protective style, as my hair is thick so my bun gets pretty big. Braids are typically my go-to style while in uniform. We do a lot of running, sweating, and training and braids make it easier to maintain the health of my hair.

fixing

Wearing my own hair in a bun is a option I sometimes choose, but the amount of gel I have to slap on my hair to slick it down is ridiculous. Now imagine having to slap gel in your hair at least 3-4 times a week!

Anything not flat against your head ( or that isn’t really close to the scalp) is a no-go.

No dying hair any “unnatural color,” no highlights, and nothing falling over the eyebrows or below the collar.

Nothing! Just a flat, against you head, boring hairstyle!

Glad to see we share the same struggle. Lol. I want start my rant on how our braids canโ€™t be โ€œin a designโ€๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜‚ ahhhh lol

    1. Lol yes! The struggle is real. Itโ€™s annoying that before we get a style we have to first think โ€œcan I wear this in uniform?โ€ Lol

  2. This leads me to wonder what are the military hair standards in my country, Jamaica. I’ve done summer work at our largest military base before and from the few female soldiers I remember seeing, it was mostly short relaxed hairstyles or cornrows. ๐Ÿค” Pretty restrictive rules but keep pushing on!

    1. Yes it can be such a bummer cause our hair is so versatile. But I sometimes donโ€™t get the luxury of exploring all that my hair can do cause of these standards lol

      1. I can just imagine. Hopefully you find the energy to style your hair and get all fancy on the days you don’t have work ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ kudos to your guts girl! I can’t even think of the military. Try flat twists and cornrows just to keep your hair protected.

    1. Thank you queen! And yes flat twist have been a life saver for me!

  4. I feel you love …all the best !

    1. Thank you

  5. Hey I’m so happy to see your post. Have plans joining my country’s immigration. Wish me luck๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

    1. Best of luck! and hopefully your countries hair standards aren’t as strict lol

  6. Wow! That’s crazy ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ I love wearing my fro out so much I wouldn’t be able to.

    1. I know ๐Ÿ™ I get so frustrated sometimes. I love wearing my hair out lol
